You should care because C-51 will directly affect your quality of life through both your health and potentially through much higher health costs. Multinational pharmaceutical companies are working under the mandate of a trade commission of the World Trade Organization and through drug friendly organizations such as Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration in the US to restrict access to healthy natural therapies which have many benefits yet none of the risks of pharmaceutical drugs. Health Canada has been stopped several times in the past from pushing this agenda but has also resisted the intention of Canada’s Parliament to redefine natural supplements more effectively.
Pharmaceutical companies have been successful in other countries in restricting market access to many simple healthy things that we take for granted, like Vitamin C tablets. In Germany, for example, you must now book an appointment with a doctor to obtain a prescription for a few tablets of extremely low dosage vitamin C, all of it manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and none of it obtained naturally. The cost alone of these tablets is now many times more expensive than they once were, and the health systems are burdened by the extra costs of the doctor visits. There needs to be a recognition of chemicals, such as vitamins and minerals, which are natural to the human body and have no toxicity to humans, from those substances, where artificially derived or derived from natural plants etc., which are not natural to the human body. This is the issue of toxicity that essentially differentiates drugs from healthy supplements. Bill C-51 makes no provisions to recognize these differences. Under the false premise of protecting the health of Canadians Bill C-51 seeks to have all natural therapies undergo clinical trials similar to those used to determine the benefits and risks of generally toxic pharmaceutical drugs. These clinical trials generally cost up to and beyond $20,000,000. The costs can be recovered for drugs because they are patented and stiff prices are charged. Common vitamins and minerals CAN NOT be patented, therefore no funds are available to put them through these trials C-51 seeks to impose. The bill makes no effort to address this imbalance.
Also, the Bill and the general public assumes that medical doctors will be called upon as the experts to adjudicate the administration of vitamins and mineral supplements. Extensive as their training is, medical doctors are not trained in the use of these supplements and generally would be at a loss. Their training, largely through the efforts of pharmaceutical companies, is geared towards the use of pharmaceutical drugs alone. While pharmacists and dieticians are better trained in this matter, Bill C-51 does not address this problem issue in the least of adequate training.
There are a lot of holes in this proposed legislation that need to be addressed. Many Members of Parliament, across all party lines, have expressed strong concern and frustration at what the current government is seeking to do with this current legislation. That’s why you should be concerned. Please contact your local MP and let him or her know of your concern.
A cynic might suggest that this could be a dream situation for pharmaceutical companies: creating an environment where people are deprived of nutritional concentrates, bringing on chronic illness, cont... |
